Salary Information
Salary levels are often a central talking point among those considering a move over to London. It is widely recognised that salaries and benefits, including holiday allowances, are much better than in Australia or New Zealand. The common lament however, is that the cost of living is so much higher and that any increase is soon eaten up.
There is some truth in that, but most people don't live on the doorstep of work or eat out six nights a week. Even a straw poll would suggest that lawyers with City firms don't miss too many meals and usually live quite well. Most returning Aussies also have some savings to show for their time abroad, have had the opportunity to travel in Europe and have generally enjoyed the whole experience.
Law firms
As far as law firms are concerned, it does depend on the size and location of the firm and, to an extent, the area in which you specialise. The other point to note is that firms will deduct 1-2 years from your experience to reflect the fact that in some states you only do one year of articles (as opposed to two years if you train and qualify in the UK) and to allow for the knowledge you will have to build now that you are working in a different jurisdiction. Salaries in other jurisdictions vary enormously.
In-house
In-house salaries tend to see lower basics but the additional benefits, which may include car allowances, bonuses or stock options, do add up!
