Hays Architecture
JANUARY - MARCH 2012
Hotspots
Towards the final quarter of 2011 we saw some modest growth in the architecture sector with demand for Graduate and Intermediate Architects, Project Architects and Architectural Technicians. However, overall the sector is still very constrained and many of the larger practices closed down for four weeks over the Christmas period to reduce costs.
Having said this, demand is increasing in relation to initial enquiries for registered Architects with Revit software experience, while office fit-outs in Christchurch are impacting slightly on demand.
The coming quarter
New Zealand’s architectural industry will continue to be relatively quiet in the Wellington and North Island regions. Architectural practices in general can only roughly predict what their future workloads may look like over the next few months.
Employer trends
The architectural market is not seeing a great deal of new recruitment activity at present. The general feel in the Wellington market is that this will change in mid 2012, while the Christchurch rebuild will keep practices based in the South Island busy. Those practices with a national office network will also use their North Island offices to provide support on larger projects in the South.
Candidate trends
The Christchurch rebuild will continue to leave staffing gaps in the North Island as Architects and Drafters look to relocate to the South Island for the next five to ten years of design and contraction work.
