Are your skills in demand? 53% of employers to increase permanent headcount – here’s where

Financial Analysts, Site Managers, Structural Engineers and Front-End Developers are four of the skills sought by the 53 per cent of employers who plan to increase permanent staff levels in the coming 12 months, according to recruiting experts Hays.

In a survey of more than 480 organisations in New Zealand for the annual Hays Salary Guide, the recruiter found that 18 per cent also plan to increase their use of temporary and contract staff.

“The coming six months will see continued positive business sentiment, which helps account for falling unemployment, good job opportunities and expected headcount increases,” says Jason Walker, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand.

“But labour supply has been an ongoing issue across New Zealand for some time. With over three-quarters (78 per cent) of employers indicating that skill shortages are likely to impact the effective operation of their business or department, career progression, ongoing learning & development and a competitive salary will help employers attract and retain skills in demand.”

According to the Hays Jobs Report, released today and covering the July to December half, skills in demand for the six months ahead include:

Accountancy & Finance: In commerce and industry, Financial Analysts, Finance Business Partners and Internal Auditors are required. Within professional practice, audit, tax and business advisory professionals at all levels are sought.

Architecture: Registered Architects and Project Architects at a senior level are in demand. Practices are also looking for Revit and ArchiCAD Technicians proficient in creating detailed construction documentation.

Construction: Project Managers, Site Managers and Estimators are in demand across much of the country for demolition and earthquake strengthening work as well as civil, commercial and residential projects.

Contact Centres: Demand exists for Telesales professionals, Inbound Salespeople and Insurance Sales Consultants.

Engineering: Structural Engineers with strong knowledge of seismic structures, Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors are required.

Facilities Management: Facilities Managers are needed across the country, particularly in Wellington where proven project management experience, including upgrades and refurbishments, is needed.

Human Resources: HR Business Partners with experience working collaboratively to develop solutions, Health & Safety professionals and Learning & Development professionals are needed.

Information Technology: Demand is high for DevOps professionals, Front-End Developers, Full Stack Developers, UX/UI Designers, Data Scientists and Engineers, and Cyber Security and Data Security experts.

Insurance: Claims professionals, Property Underwriters and Motor Assessors are all sought.

Legal: Construction Lawyers, Commercial Property Lawyers and Corporate and Commercial Lawyers are in demand.

Marketing & Digital: Digital Marketing Managers, Marketing Automation Specialists and Heads of Marketing are all sought.

Office Support: Demand will be high for multi-skilled office support professionals for hybrid roles, as well as skilled Executive and Personal Assistants.

Property: Commercial Property Brokers with office leasing experience, Residential and Commercial Development Managers and Property Managers are needed.

Sales: Demand exists for sales professionals with local market knowledge and an existing network of contacts, as well as strong communications skills.

Trades & Labour: Skilled and competent Registered Electricians, Registered Plumbers and Carpenters and Roofers are required.
