A great opportunity has become available for an experienced Company Accountant to lead the finance function in a busy contracting environment. This role suits someone who enjoys variety, ownership, and being the go‑to person for all things finance.
Tō tūranga hou | Your new role
You’ll manage end‑to‑end finance processes, deliver accurate financial reporting and support operational teams with job costing and project profitability analysis. This is a sole‑charge position with one direct report, ideal for someone confident running daily finance operations and ensuring compliance across the business.
- Produce monthly and annual financial results, supporting schedules, and year-end packs for external accountants
- Perform Balance Sheet reconciliations and contract retention reconciliations
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and statutory returns (GST, PAYE, Companies Office)
- Work with Project Managers and QS teams to monitor job costing, WIP, and project margins
- Handle cash book processing, bank/credit card reconciliations, and payment/receipting
- Oversee Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions
- Process weekly payroll
- Manage vehicle fleet administration (servicing, WOF, RUC, fuel cards)
- Maintain asset registers and depreciation schedules
- Perform general administrative tasks as required
Ngā uara me ngā pūkenga e angitu ai koe | What you'll need to succeed
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CA/CPA preferred
- 5+ years’ full‑cycle accounting – experienced in preparing financial statements and management accounts for SMEs
- 3+ years’ payroll experience for 50–100 staff
- Strong knowledge of NZ accounting standards and payroll legislation
- Experience with job costing and operational finance
- Confident leading the finance function in a sole‑charge role
- Proficient with Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, or similar
- Strong Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, reporting)
- Construction or Trades & Services industry experience is an advantage
- Commercially minded and proactive
- Strong communicator with excellent attention to detail
- Able to multitask and thrive in a busy environment
- A problem‑solver with a “can‑do” attitude
