A highly respected organisation within the legal and regulatory sector is seeking a Professional Standards Officer to join their Wellington-based team. This organisation plays a critical role in maintaining professional conduct and public trust in the legal profession. Your new role

This is a 6-month fixed-term contract where you’ll be part of a collaborative team responsible for managing complaints and supporting regulatory processes. You’ll investigate and assess complaints under relevant legislation, prepare reports and documentation for decision-making panels, and liaise with legal professionals, members of the public, and other stakeholders. The role requires a high level of discretion, empathy, and professionalism, as you’ll be working with individuals under pressure and navigating sensitive matters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Receiving and processing complaints in line with legislative and procedural guidelines
  • Conducting investigations and preparing reports for Standards Committees
  • Supporting mediation and enforcement processes
  • Maintaining accurate records and managing case documentation
  • Communicating effectively with legal professionals, complainants, and external bodies

What you'll need to succeed

  • At least 3 years’ experience working in a legal environment (a practising certificate is not required)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise documentation
  • Strong organisational skills
  • High levels of empathy, and resilience
  • Confidence working independently and collaboratively within a team
