Hays Recruitment is seeking qualified and experienced Plumbers for an exceptional opportunity to work at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. This role offers a unique combination of technical challenge, remote location experience and a once in a lifetime professional opportunity.

This is a full on site deployment. You will live and work on the ice for the duration of the assignment.

About the Role
You will carry out plumbing maintenance, repairs and construction work across a wide range of systems and facilities. Working under the Plumbing Foreman, you will support essential station operations in one of the most demanding environments on the planet.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, fit, connect and maintain plumbing piping, fixtures, equipment and systems
  • Diagnose faults and perform preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Maintain plumbing systems inside and outside buildings
  • Respond to emergency call outs during and outside normal working hours
  • Accurately document work completed, materials used and hours worked
  • Work from job plans, drawings, schematics, manuals and relevant codes
  • Follow established SOPs and contribute to improvements where required
  • Perform work outdoors in extreme cold and challenging weather conditions
  • Identify hazards and maintain a strong safety focus
  • Work collaboratively with other trades and departments
  • Use computer based systems for labour, materials and maintenance tracking
  • Participate in station community duties such as cleaning, recycling and general upkeep
  • Support remote field facilities when required
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • New Zealand Registered Plumber or recognised overseas equivalent
  • Minimum four years’ experience across all phases of the plumbing trade
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing principles and relevant codes
  • Ability to diagnose, repair and maintain a wide range of plumbing systems
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and technical documents
  • Competent with computer based maintenance and inventory systems
  • New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency or valid NZ work rights (no sponsorship available, WHV is acceptable with relevant experience)
  • Full New Zealand driving licence
  • Ability to pass medical, dental, drug testing and criminal background checks
  • Physically capable of lifting, climbing, crawling and working outdoors in extreme cold

  • Fitness and capability assessments for remote location work
