Location: McMurdo Station, Antarctica, Full Time, On Site, Summer season (Estimated October 2026 – Feb 2027)
This is a full on site deployment. You will live and work on the ice for the duration of the assignment.

About the Role As a Utility Mechanic, you will carry out a wide range of maintenance, repair, and preventative servicing across buildings, plant, systems, and infrastructure. Work is scheduled according to operational priorities and may include both planned and reactive tasks.
You will be part of a tight knit team ensuring station facilities remain safe, reliable, and fully operational in extreme Antarctic conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled preventative maintenance on buildings, systems, and equipment
- Overhaul and repair facility equipment including HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic systems, pumps, compressors, overhead doors, hoists, kitchen/galley equipment, shop tools, and other assets
- Troubleshoot and repair failures across support systems, including commercial kitchen equipment
- Perform plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs as required
- Respond to emergency callouts during and outside normal working hours
- Act as first responder for facility and utility system faults
- Assist with inventory planning and materials resupply
- Complete accurate documentation of hours, materials, and work performed
- Work from job plans, drawings, schematics, manuals, and specifications
- Follow and contribute to Standard Operating Procedures
- Work outdoors in extreme cold, wind, and challenging conditions
- Collaborate with other departments to complete station tasking
- Use computer based maintenance and inventory systems
- Participate in community duties such as cleaning, recycling, and station upkeep
- Comply with all Environmental, Safety and Health requirements
Required Qualifications & Experience
- New Zealand citizenship, permanent residency, or valid NZ work rights (no sponsorship available; WHV acceptable with relevant experience)
- Minimum four years’ experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities maintenance
- Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and diagrams
- Valid New Zealand driving licence
- Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
- Successful completion of medical, dental, drug screening, and background checks
- Participation in community duties (cleaning, recycling, general station tasks)
