Salary expectations:

How to answer this dreaded interview question

interview-question.png

What do you do when asked about your salary expectations in a job interview? In our experience, many people are unsure how to answer this question. Often they try to be vague – and subsequently when the formal offer comes through they are unhappy with the salary on offer.

Instead, our we suggest you are open and honest. The good news is that if an employer is asking you this question in an interview you are one of their preferred candidates.

So be prepared to discuss your case. Before the interview, research typical salaries for the role in a current Salary Guide. Talk to a recruiter to find out what the average salary is for the role you are going for. And be realistic – do not think of how much money you need, but rather how much the role is reasonably expected to offer.

You can then confidently tell your interviewer that based on your research similar roles are currently offering between $XX,XXX and $XX,XXX and your expectations are in line with this range.

Remember, our Hays Salary Guide is released in May each year – so look out for our latest edition, which will contain the most up-to-date salary figures for your job function.
