What does a Systems Engineer do? 

Systems Engineers serve an integral role with respect to the IT services of an organisation. They are responsible for the implementation, maintenance and support of both software and hardware components. These include, but are not limited to, computer systems, networks, security, and communication mediums such as email. 

What skills does a Systems Engineer need to have?

A Systems Engineer combines an understanding of engineering and management to develop systems within an organisation with the aim of increasing productivity. 

A Systems Engineer should be proficient building, implementing, configuring, and providing support for a range of platforms and operating systems that could range from Windows, UNIX, Linux, Cloud and Virtualization. Similarly, there is a growing expectation that the Systems Engineer is familiar with technologies such as cloud computing and cyber security. Those with in-depth knowledge on web-based services along with alternate options such as Saas and Iaas will be well positioned. 
The technical skills required to be a Systems Engineer could range from virtualisation, cloud, automation and scripting. Proficiency across data environments and tools such as SQL, AWS and Power BI will provide candidates with greater versatility with respect to suitable roles. 

Systems Engineer job responsibilities

  • Manage and review installed systems and infrastructure 
  • Evaluate existing systems, explore areas of improvement and source appropriate upgrades to optimise output 
  • Install, configure, assess and sustain operating systems, software and system tools 
  • Assist in the design of information and support systems 
  • Design, implement and monitor security systems including backup and safeguards  
  • Set up and monitor feedback protocols across all systems  
  • Develop training programs and documentation which is to be complimented by technical support 
  • Work in conjunction with project management teams to ensure successful implementation of initiatives 
  • Demonstrate strong planning, coordination and communication skills

This is deemed important in the process of providing technical support.

Tools and software Systems Engineers use

Operating Systems: Windows, UNIX, Linux and cloud-based solutions including Azure and AWS, virtual technologies such as Hyper-V, VMware and Citrix
Networking: OSI network layers, TCP/IP networking protocol and network security
Scripting and Programming languages would be advantageous: Powershell, Python, Ruby, Perl, R etc
Communication Platforms: Email, Slack, Teams, Zoom, Google Meets etc
